The “Days” of Our Lives

I love Fall. It’s by far my favorite time of year. And no matter how long it’s been since I was in school, September is always the beginning of a new year for me (January is so passé) – with new opportunities, new ventures, new resolutions. I feel inspired. And I often feel quite nostalgic – for all the great things that were part of the school year. Of course it’s still about the new Fall wardrobe (which I always seem to break out right before one last heat wave of the summer) and, yes, shiny new pens and highlighters – but I miss the other things like Show-n-Tell and all the special “days” we had.

Remember those? Hot Dog day, Sports day, Canada Fitness day . . . why did we stop having those exactly? Are they really below us now that we’re all grown up and “mature”? I think we should bring them back. Especially Scholastic Book day – that had to be my favorite. It was so great because I would totally forget what I had ordered and then one afternoon, at the end of the school day, the teacher would handout these envelopes (ah yes, the awesome bubble-wrap envelopes!) of mysterious contents and I would rush home in anticipation of what new books I was going to devour. It was freaking Christmas morning! Yup, we should definitely bring back some of those “days” – I miss them!

This Fall one of my much-anticipated “days” is CREATIVEMIX – a creative conference I get to co-produce. It’s always exciting to see the transformation of the exhibition hall and see the crowd gather at the theatre doors for the speaker sessions. If you’re looking for something to inspire you for the coming year, something to spark that next creative endeavor – come check it out. Make it one of your “Scholastic Book” days this year. The first of many!
